Rory McIlroy’s golfing journey began before he was capable of holding a club let alone sinking a birdie! In the 1990s Gerry, Rory’s father who worked at a pub in Northern Ireland would walk over a mile, pushing Rory in a stroller to the local 18- hole golf course not far from the McIlroy’s home on Belfast road. Rory would sit quietly & watch Gerry on the putting greens and as he honed his swing. It was there that Rory found his early … early passion for the great game of golf! Its interesting that his early exposure to the game got him hooked at such an early age, often as we know this is not the case. Rory’s single minded focus and pursuit of success in the game truly has never been in question.
Fast Forward 15 years, McIlroy was a member of Europe’s winning 2004 Junior Ryder Cup team; the event was held in Ohio. In 2005, McIlroy became the youngest ever winner of both the West of Ireland Championship and the Irish Close Championship. He retained the West of Ireland Championship in 2006 and followed that up with back-to-back wins at the Irish Close Championship. In August 2006, he won the European Amateur at Biella Golf Club, near Milan, Italy, with the score of 274.
As an international sportsman, I am very lucky to be supported by people all over the world, many of who treat me as one of their own, no matter what their nationality, or indeed mine. This is the way sport should be. Rory Mcllroy
In late 2004, at age 15, he signed a letter of intent to play collegiate golf at East Tennessee State University, but after his wins in 2005, he decided to forgo the golf scholarship and continue to play amateur golf in Europe. McIlroy shot a bogeyfree opening round of 3-under-par 68 at the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie, his first major championship entry. He shot +5 overall and was the highest finishing amateur, winning the silver medal. Now in October 2016 Rory has just won the FedEx cup, and is a two time winner of the Mark H. McCormack Award for leading the Official World Golf Ranking for the most weeks in the year (22 of 52 weeks).
To be a top-class athlete, you have to train hard, you have to eat right, you have to get enough rest. I feel the way golf is going nowadays, you have to treat yourself as an athlete. Rory Mcllroy
Rory has undoubtedly become a leading force in the modern game, both as a role model for young golfers & as a consistent fixture in all recent major tournaments. Many have looked to Rory to help modernize the game; his charisma, style & sportsmanship have all made him a popular global personality on and off the course. He’s often named sports most marketable male alongside the likes of Lionel Messi & Ronaldo. In 2013 this was consummate with the signing of a 100+ Million dollar deal with Nike! We have little doubt 2017 will bring more of the same successes from the 27 year old & wish him all the best, we will be watching & practicing our swing!
